Giants come up fruitless after their weekend is capped off with a loss to the London Lions. The Giants come up short 89-83.

It was Vince Macaulay’s return to the copperbox this evening which was met in the best way possible: smiles, greetings and a basketball game between 2 of the league’s most exciting rosters.

Tajh Green started strong in the Giants trip to the capital scoring the Giants first 7 points in the opening quarter and 9 points for the entire quarter. An opening quarter where Kostas Kuofos of the London Lions and Tajh Green went score for score in the opening minutes looking to outdo each other. Other than green, the giants struggled offensively against a strong London Lions team, 19 points for the entire quarter on 6/19 from the field. Despite a low scoring Giants quarter, the Giants kept it close on the defensive end with William Lee and Anthony Roberson taking to the skies to deflect whilst also picking the pockets of the Lions offence. It was a defensively sound quarter for the Giants, keeping it to a single possession game.

Throughout the second quarter, The Giants were still within reaching distance of the lead in the opening periods, some stretches of solid basketball from Vince Macaulay’s men but unable to capitalize. Coupled with some costly turnovers saw the London Lions start to expand their single possession lead to multiple with back to back threes. Tajh Green once again proved to be an offensive spark with a dunk that shook the Copperbox arena in an attempt to swing momentum for the Giants to finish the quarter off on a good note. Momentum subsequently did swing as the Giants went on a 7-0 scoring run to bring the lead within 4. Legend Robertin produced some shifty footwork against the Lions defender down low to equal Tajh Green with a monster jam of his own and bring the Giants within a single possession. The Lions made it a 2 possession game once more and that was where the quarter ended, 46-42.

The Giants wasted no time in cutting down the lead as Dirk Williams produced a big three pointer to take the Giants from 4 down to 1 down. That was the closest the Giants got to regaining the lead as the London Lions regained their double possession lead Turnovers looked to be costly once more for Manchester with passing lanes consistently cut leading to dangerous chances from the London Lions. On the other hand, both teams went score for score throughout the quarter, both scoring 24 a piece with only 1 point separating the teams from the second quarter in comparison to the third.

Legend Robertin makes another massive dunk to take the Giants back within 2. Giants captain Rahmon Fletcher took the Giants over the line with an equally massive 4 point play, putting the offensive weight on his back. The shoe was on the other foot at the halfway point of the final quarter. After trailing for a vast majority of the game, the Giants found themselves on the opposite side of the lead, consistently maintaining a 1 possession advantage over the Lions. A pair of Ovie Soko free throws as well as a make from Hruban put favour back into the hands of the adversaries. The deciding factor was the Injury to William Lee’s left ankle as he landed awkwardly on the way down from a close shot which resulted in him needing treatment. After he left the court the Lions started to pull away which sealed this game.

Tajh Green led scorers this evening with 22 points, he also led the Giants in rebounds with 7 and was undoubtedly electrifying. Rahmon Fletcher and Dirk Williams also followed suit with 15 and 11 points respectively. Legend Robertin had an incredibly impressive night as well finishing with 10 points and 6 rebounds in 20 minutes. An efficient night for the big man.

Head Coach Vince Macaulay said: “It was a tough loss, we thought we could get over the line but they have some impressive players in Koufos and Zubcic who helped them, I’m pleased with our effort and we’ll only get better”.
