Manchester Giants coach Danny Byrne hailed a team effort as his side reached the BBL Cup semi-finals with an away win against holders Cheshire Phoenix.

A superb first quarter, in which point guard Mike McCall Jr shot four from four three pointers got the Giants up and running, but they were pegged back after half time to trail briefly.

But Callum Jones kept his cool from the free throw line late on and a big play by Vlatko Granic as the game closed out helped seal a fine victory and earn a place in the last four.

Byrne said: “The focus all week was on how we were going to defend Cheshire. The character that the team showed throughout the middle of that third quarter when everything thing seemed to be going wrong.

“Every single one of them played their absolute hearts out, it was a real defensive effort, a real team effort.

“The guys have left absolutely everything out there for us.

“There must have been 50 travelling fans here today which is absolutely great, the noise they made really helped us push on and we really appreciate them coming along and cheering us on, and hopefully they’ll be there for the semi-finals as well!”

The BBL Cup semi-final draw takes place on Tuesday afternoon at 3pm, live on the BBL’s official Facebook page. The other three teams in the draw are Glasgow Rocks, London Lions and Newcastle Eagles.
