Giants Grab 2x BBL MVP

Giants Grab 2x BBL MVP

Vince Macaulay has made his first signing since taking the job as Giants’ Head Coach, and it’s a name that will be familiar to everyone in the BBL.

Point guard Rahmon Fletcher joins from the Newcastle Eagles having twice been crowned as BBL Most Valuable Player.

Fletcher spent seven seasons with the Eagles, split by a single year in Slovakia with Košice, here in the BBL he won the league MVP in 2016 and 2017 and the play-off MVP in 2015. He helped Eagles to five straight BBL Cup finals, winning a hat-trick of MVP awards between 2015 and 2017.

Macaulay is understandably delighted to sign the 33-year-old point guard: “Adding such quality, experience and leadership to our club is amazing” he said, “Rahmon’s achievements speak for themselves consistently leading the league in assists, he was leading scorer just a season ago, but the main thing is he’s a winner and he will love what we’re building here in Manchester.”

As Macaulay says, Fletcher led the BBL in assists last season, averaging a 15.2 point, 10.6 assist double-double. The previous season had seen Fletcher record the rare achievement of leading the BBL in both points (19.2) and assists (9.3), a feat he had also achieved in 2016/17.

Fletcher will go into the 2022/23 season looking to lead the BBL in assists for a fifth straight season having also topped the table in the year prior to his spell in Slovakia.

The Kansas City-born player had a stellar college career with Green Bay, being named in the Horizon League rookie team in 2008, the all-league team in 2010 and the league’s second team in both 2009 and 2011, Fletcher had this to say:

“I’m excited to sign in Manchester! New situation from what I’ve been a part of for the past 7 years in Newcastle, a place I will always hold close to me and be grateful for what we’ve achieved while being there! It allowed me to grow not only on the court but also off! Nothing but the utmost respect for Paul and Sam Blake, as well as everyone part of the club there! And some of the best fans that I’ve experienced in my basketball career!

Now it’s time to embark on new challenges and goals, and I’m really looking forward to doing that in Manchester! A wonderful city that I’ve been to many times and a strong basketball culture with support from fans as well! Looking forward to getting started!

Further player news is expected imminently whilst tickets and further details around our games will come out nearer the season start.
