Manchester Giants are delighted to announce the signing of Eduard Arqués, a 25-year-old, 6’8” Spanish forward who joins from German side VfL Bochum ahead of the 2019-20 British Basketball League (BBL) campaign.

In Germany’s ProB last season, Arqués averaged 13 points and 5 rebounds per game, shooting 57% inside and 26% from the three-point line, to go with 1.7 assists and one steal per outing. Bochum finished 6th in the league – with four teams on the same record – after a huge win on the final day of the season, in which Arqués had 10 points and 5 rebounds in just 11 minutes of action, before they were knocked out in the first round of the Play-offs.

That was his second season in Germany as, in 2017-18, he starred for BC Speyer, putting up 20 points and 8 rebounds per game, shooting 64% inside and 27% from the three-point line, and again adding 2 assists each time. His team finished with a 26-2 record, while Arqués was awarded the European Player of the Year Award, also being nominated to the All-Regionalliga South-West 1st Team.

Prior to that, he played in Spain for CB L’Hospitalet on the outskirts of his native Barcelona. In 2015-16 he averaged 9 points and 5 rebounds per game, shooting 59% inside and 32% three-pointers, as the team only lost two games all season and achieved promotion from the EBA, before averaging 9 points and 4 rebounds in LEB Silver the following year.

Giants’ Head Coach, Danny Byrne, said,

“Edu brings an amazing amount of versatility to our frontcourt: he can play inside, in transition, as a stretch four, at the five, and even has the ball handling and vision to play as a point forward. He is exactly what modern Manchester Giants basketball is all about, and he’s well suited to the BBL.

“Edu is an ideal complement to Tiel Daniels in the frontcourt, and will also create opportunities for our guards to attack in different ways.

“He has been remarkably consistent at various levels in the last four years in Spain and Germany, and in that time has been on championship teams, promotion winning teams, and all of the time a high volume scorer, solid rebounder and good facilitator for his teammates. Giants’ fans will enjoy his style of play.”

Edu Arques said,

“I’m really excited to be coming to Manchester and to start this new chapter in my career. I’m looking forward to getting started, working out with my teammates and meeting all of the fans and people at the club.

“I am a versatile player that does a little bit of everything: scoring the ball, putting it on the floor, rebounding. I’m just ready to play and give my everything for Giants.

“My ambition for the season is to help my team in every way I can, and to finish as high as possible.”
