Manchester Giants have completed the signing of sought-after Great Britain international guard Josh Steel ahead of the 2021-22 British Basketball League (BBL) campaign, as he returns to these shores following three seasons in Spain, joining from CB Ciudad de Ponferrada.

The 24-year-old from Harlow already has more than 50 BBL games and 500 points in the league under his belt having featured for Surrey Scorchers in two previous seasons, averaging nearly 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game as part of the successful Surrey side that finished 5th in the BBL Championship in 2017-18.

He made the move to Spain the following season, playing in Spanish LEB Gold and in LEB Silver.

Jamie Edwards saidWhat I kept hearing around the league was the consistency of performance that he will bring.  He has played at a very competitive level for two seasons.”

In those last two campaigns, he knocked down his three-point shots at 40% and was an All-LEB Silver Honourable Mention leading his team in minutes played and was among the top 10 in the league for three-point accuracy, at 44%.

The 6’4″ sharp-shooter has represented the national team and made his senior debut for Great Britain during EuroBasket 2021 Pre-Qualifiers in 2018-19. Prior to that, he earned promotion with Great Britain under-20s.

“I’m really excited about coming back to play at home in the BBL and having the chance to be in Manchester this season, I’m optimistic about the direction of the club and can’t wait to meet the fans.”

Steel is a product of Barking Abbey one of the country’s leading academies where he won the Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL) title and was MVP in the championship game.

As one of the country’s top junior prospects, he was recruited by Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, competing in the Atlantic-10 Conference, where he played 31 games in little more than a year.  We look forward to his contribution to this new campaign.
