Manchester Giants are proud to announce the return of Lloyd Gardner’s assistant coach Ploutos Vourliotis, aswell as performance data analyst Tom Fletcher to the National Basketball Performance Centre.
The 52-year-old former England international and BBL champion is returning to the Manchester touchline to help head coach Lloyd Gardner steer this new and exciting Giants team into a new and prosperous age.
Having stepped in as Interim Head Coach last year prior to Gardner’s arrival, Vourliotis demonstrated the quality of his coaching during that time mixing his experience as a player and coach and using that blend to guide the Giants through a tough time.
Vourliotis is no stranger to British Basketball having played in the Manchester United academy of the 80’s alongside Jamie Edwards and then later on for the Manchester Eagles at the age of 19 under Jeff Jones. Soon after he was off to America to play college ball at South Nazarene University in Oklahoma and then with Dekalb in Atlanta.
In August of 1994 Ploutos made his return to British Basketball with the Sheffield Sharks who in his opening campaign did the double, winning both the BBL Cup and Championship alongside current Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Ryan Finch. Following the success of that season, he joined Newcastle Comets where he also earned his first of many England national team call-ups.
Once Ploutos Vourliotis’ playing days came to an end, he threw himself into coaching and began bestowing his experience of basketball on the younger generations having coached at Manchester Magic, Manchester Mystics, and Manchester University.
Ploutos Vourliotis added ”I am delighted to be working with the Giants again this season, especially alongside coach Lloyd Gardner. I am excited about the team this season and appreciate the hard work already put in from the players and staff to make this season a success!”
Performance Data Analyst Tom Fletcher has a career already spanning fifteen years in research and analytics in a variety of contexts, including multinational business, consultancy, the military, academia,, and professional sport. Having been associated with British basketball at various levels in that time, he contributes the skills and experiences from those roles to provide data that helps inform recruitment, team and player performance evaluation, game planning, and opposition scouting.
Coach Gardner added ‘’Ploutos and Tom are vital cogs in our overall development. Ploutos showed last year when he stepped into the head coaching role the quality he is able to bring with his experience of both playing and coaching. Tom was a driving force behind a number of our signings over the off season where his knowledge and expertise in analytics give us a head start in identifying prospects that not many other BBL clubs are able to match. We also added Tom Griffiths who is new to our group this year and will bring a fresh perspective and an enthusiasm to improve and move forward with what we are able to deliver’’
