The Giants made it to their second semi-final of the season by brushing aside the Newcastle Eagles in the BBL Trophy.

Croatian Vlatko Granic led the team with a season-high 26 (plus seven assists) as the Giants got the better of their rivals for the first time in 20 attempts since their return to the league in 2012.

Having taken some big beatings in the North East that time, Danny Byrne’s men turned the tables on their hosts at the impressive new venue in fine style.

The home team closed the first half with a 9-0 run to trail by three (46-43) at the half.

But the Giants started the third quarter with an 11-2 burst and kept pulling away as they led by as many as 19 in taking the victory.

They shot 56% from the field in a clinical display and out-rebounded their opponents 51-30.

Willie Clayton had his standard double double with 16 points and 17 boards, while Mike McCall had 14 (seven assists) and Torry Butler double-doubled with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

James Jones dished out nine assists to go with his seven points while Callum Jones scored 10 in 16 minutes.

Ingus Bankevics hit six while Ramon Fletcher was the danger man for the Eagles with 23 points and 11 assists.

The Giants host Bristol Flyers in the BBL Championship at the Sportsdome on Sunday evening (5pm).
