Manchester Giants players and officials are in Tortosa, Catalonia this weekend for a pre-season tournament and team building trip. In this mini-series of blogs, we’ll give you some insight to the trip.

You can also follow the Giants on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates.

The trip started at 3.30am on Friday morning in Manchester Airport with us boarding a flight to Reus at 5.30pm. Anastasios got the last train to the airport from Manchester so was in the airport as early as 1am.

Upon arrival in Reus, we were greeted by two assistant coaches from our opponents and hosts, Cantaires Tortosa Basquet, who took us from nearby Reus to Tortosa.

After some lunch at the La Vegueria restaurant, the players were given rest time to catch up on sleep before a cultural tour of the city, taking in its fantastic cathedral and castle.

The cathedral had only been part finished hundreds of years ago due to it being in the way of cannons shooting from the castle. The inside of the cathedral was astounding.

As we entered the evening, we got our first look at the venue for our two games, the home of Cantaires Tortosa. It is a really old school venue, but a great community venue which is based on the same grounds as the local professional football team. The three-sided venue would surely create a terrific atmosphere.

The players got on the court and loosened up with some shots, while the coaching staff got to watch Cantaires. Three-quarters of the squad have made the trip, the exceptions being Harold Trobo, Clayfell Harris, Usman Baba and Austin Rettig, who is due to arrive in the UK next week.

Afterwards, we returned to the fantastic La Vegueria who have fed us like kings on our first day.

The first game of the weekend takes place at 7pm local time on Saturday, followed by a second game at 12noon on Sunday against the Europe Basketball Academy.
