The Manchester Giants lost for the first time in the league this season, as they were beaten by a game Worcester Wolves side 84-76.
The Giants came into the game off the back of two strong defensive performances in a row, but they were unable to contain a Wolves team who were deadly in transition. The game was tied at 66 each early in the fourth quarter, but the home side went on a late run thanks to some big scores from Micah Elan, and the Giants were left with no time to recover.
Lyle Hexom and Sam Cassell Jr were the big scorers on the night with 24 points and 19 points respectively, and recent super sub Jordan Whelan contributed with 10 of his own.
The Manchester defence has been well drilled and aggressive in the opening parts of the campaign, but it wasn’t enough to topple an on-form Worcester offence which saw their captain Maarten Bouwknecht score a massive 29, even with some good rebounding contributions from Hexom and Breaon Brady. There was also more early season foul trouble for Danny Byrne’s side, with Donovan Johnson fouling out of the game in the final minutes and Worcester attempting 22 shots from the free throw line.
It’s an unfortunate start to a hectic schedule for the Giants, with this being their first of five games in just nine days.
‘’We had a lack of focus and lacked discipline. Before you know it we were chasing the game and trying to find a way back’’. Said Head Coach Danny Byrne.
Round two of the BBL finishes up this Sunday, where the Giants will be looking for a response against the always challenging Newcastle Eagles.
